Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) is one of the major aviation hubs in East Asia, serving both international and domestic flights for as many as 80 million passengers each year. A key hub for Shanghai Airlines, Air China, and China Eastern Airlines, PVG also holds the distinction of housing the largest express freight aerial hub in Asia.

As PVG continued its multi-year expansion project in 2019, China’s first state-owned design institute, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute (ECADI) led the charge. Founded in 1952, ECADI is one of the most renowned architecture design institutes in China and the logical choice for a project as massive and vital as the PVG expansion. As the project entered its final phase, ASI Group was honored to have been selected to partner with ECADI in helping give flight to their creative vision in some of the airport’s most high traffic public spaces.

The original design included a plan to house the washroom accessories inside wooden cabinets. As an alternative, ASI worked with the architect and owner and presented the Velare™ mirror cabinet, acknowledging that it is the most advanced product of its type in the world. Velare™ cabinets provide a more practical and aesthetically pleasing solution to complement their modern design. In addition to the Velare™ Behind the Mirror cabinet, the restroom design also included ASI’s baby changing stations, grab bars, LED mirror, and cell phone shelves.

ASI’s Velare™ Behind the Mirror system has been designed to elegantly conceal clutter. A stainless steel cabinet houses a hands-free automatic soap dispenser, with a choice of either a paper towel dispenser or a high-speed hand dryer, with HEPA filter. The mirrored door features ¼” thick tempered glass, supported by two damped gas springs when opened. The innovative unit features etched backlit icons which direct users to a hands-free choice between soap and hand-drying option. The high-capacity foam or liquid soap dispenser is ideal for high-frequency use restrooms, while the paper towel dispenser has a built-in 500 towel capacity. The optional high-speed, low-decibel hand dryer includes a HEPA filter for enhanced germ protection.

ASI Group partitions, washroom accessories, lockers, and visual display products are featured in some of the world’s most prominent airport projects. Whether you’ve been in the JFK International Airport in New York, or Sacramento International Airport in California, chances are you’ve seen ASI.
